Resource: “The Ugly Truth”

A couple of years ago, somehow my world collided with the world of Matthew Fradd.  At the time, Matt was a missionary in Ireland.  The only connection we had is that we both had ‘porn sites’ as he jokingly refers to them.  He asked me to write for him, and I agreed (not after a little debate).  I have been a regular contributor to The Porn Effect ever since, and have been able to speak alongside Matt (he takes the guys, I take the girls).  It has been a delight to watch God grow Matt’s ministry and work in his life.  Matt is now a speaker with Catholic answers and is one of the Chastity Project speakers.

So, it is my pleasure to announce and “advertise” his latest offering.

In his new Audio Set, The Ugly Truth, Matthew Fradd interviews two former porn-industry insiders who reveal that “the business” is not the harmless pleasure-factory it’s portrayed to be, but a squalid prison of lies, misery, and pain.

April Garris grew up wanting to be a veterinarian, not a “porn star,” but after a lonely and abusive childhood she found herself unable to say no when her scheming husband wheedled her into filming a sex scene. They needed the money, he said, and besides, it aroused him. Soon she was a regular performer in L.A.’s “Porn Valley,” along with countless girls like herself, forced to swallow their fear and shame while they exhausted their bodies and deadened their souls. Off-camera they cried, zoned out with drugs, and counted the minutes until they could collect their money and go home. By the time God’s grace broke through and rescued her, the life had robbed April of everything: her purity, her family, her dignity.

A minister’s son, Donny Pauling had already rejected his Christian upbringing when he decided that he liked using porn so much, he might as well make a career out of it. Soon his websites were drawing millions of visitors and he was an in-demand film producer. Over the next decade he estimates he recruited more than 500 girls into the business, one by one watching “the light go out in their eyes” as the cameras stole their innocence. His wife left when she found out, and years of up-close porn exposure twisted his mind and stunted his ability to love. His career was flourishing, though, and soon Playboy came calling with a big-bucks offer. But Holy Spirit came calling at the same time, and he would not be denied. Today Donny, like April, devotes his life to exposing the myths of the porn industry.

The Ugly Truth is difficult but edifying listening: a sobering answer to porn’s lies and a powerful exhortation to pray for the many men and women caught within its snare.

Matthew Fradd is Australian by birth and Catholic by choice. After experiencing a profound conversion at World Youth Day in Rome in 2000, Matthew committed himself to inviting others to know Jesus Christ and the Church He founded. As a missionary in Canada and Ireland, Matthew proclaimed the Gospel to over ten thousand teens and young adults. Matthew has also served the Church through full-time lay ministry in Australia,Ireland, Canada, and Texas. Matthew has been seen or heard on the BBC, EWTN, The Irish Morning Show, and Catholic Answers Live, where he has shared his personal story of sin, redemption, and healing to people all over the world.

Recently, Matthew, his fearless Texan wife, and their three beautiful children (Liam, Avila, and baby on the way) moved to sunny San Diego where Matthew now works as an Apologist and Speaker with Catholic Answers. Matthew best demonstrates his infectious passion for the faith when he speaks about the many wounds that pornography inflicts, the healing that Christ offers in the Sacraments, and the freedom that the Church proposes in Her teachings on the virtue of chastity.
